Chest Pain:
Chest pain is discomfort feeling in area below neck to upper abdomen. Chest area protects the major organs of the body. It also has some valuable blood vessels that are important for our life.
One of biggest myth about chest pain is that it is always due to heart attack but that’s not always true. There are several reasons for chest pain that can be very serious or may be trivial. It is also considered that chest pain feeling is same for everybody but in reality, it can be different for everyone. You may also feel pain in other areas of the body like in arms, jaw, upper back or feeling unwell.
How It Feels in Different Gender?
- Women feel heart related chest pain during rest or sleep while Men tend to feel it during activity.
- Diabetic patients may not feel any pain before heart attack because of nerve damage.
Chest Pain Symptoms:
Chest pain may feel like aching, burning, sharp, dull, stabbing, crushing or squeezing sensation according to its cause. Other symptoms that can occur along with chest pain are:
- Tightness or heaviness in chest
- Tenderness or stiffness in chest
- Difficulty in breathing
- Increased or decreased heart rate
- Swollen belly
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Confusion
- Excessive sweating
- Fever
- Vomiting

Causes of Chest Pain:
Heart problems
Heart attack in which the vessel supplying blood to heart gets blocked and causes heaviness, pressure, squeezing and pain in chest and other areas of body like upper back, arms and neck. Angina pain feels like heaviness and pressure in chest area or like indigestion. This occurs due to reduced blood supply to heart muscles. Increased heart size, inflammation of the sac surrounding heart and injury to the main artery of heart causes chest pain.
Lung’s problems
Lung’s problems that can cause chest pain includes infection in lungs, high blood pressure in artery supplying blood to lungs, blockage of artery supplying blood to lungs, airway muscle spasm, narrowing of air pipe due to swelling and excessive mucus production in airway, inflammation in layer surrounding lungs or due to any tumor in lungs.
Digestive System
Sometimes Inflammation of pancreas or gall bladder may cause chest pain problem after eating heavy meal.
Stomach problems like indigestion, acidity in stomach, food pipe muscle spasm, failure in closure of stomach lower sphincter resulting in acid reflux and can cause chest pain.
Persistent cough causes muscles soreness in chest area and it may be a reason for chest pain.
Fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndrome can cause muscle related chest pain.
Any trauma to chest causing Ribs fracture, rib dislocation, bruising in chest area, inflammation of ribs cartilage, strains or pulling of chest muscles causes chest pain.
Psychological effect
Anxiety or Panic attacks can also cause chest pain.
Solutions for Chest Pain:
Chest pain may increase during movement, coughing, sneezing or by inhalation or exhalation. Some types of chest pain can be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle like consuming high fiber diet, avoiding eating fatty foods, choosing not to smoke and by doing regular exercise.
There are also some useful exercises for the relieve of muscular chest pain like chest stretches.
- Start with seated or standing position
- Both of your arms hanging along your sides
- Pressed down your shoulders away from ears
- Broaden your chest and gently squeeze your shoulder blades together
- Bring your arms back and hold from elbow to elbow
- Wait for 30 seconds and relax
- Repeat this 3 times
